Abstract

The Austrian issue was one of the most significant topics discussed on the international stage during and after World War II conferences. It was a consequence of the rise and fall of Nazism in Germany. The Allies, who emerged victorious from the war, did not treat Austria as a war prize but rather as a victim of Nazism. Their political proposals during these conferences aimed to achieve Austria’s independence, which was managed by Allied forces, and to form a provisional government that led to fair elections, ultimately achieving the desired goal.

The main obstacles faced by the conference participants regarding the Austrian issue at the Potsdam Conference were due to political tensions between the Soviet Union, which aimed to include Austria within its sphere of influence, and the United States, which strongly opposed the spread of communism into Austrian territory. Consequently, the Austrian issue was not definitively resolved at this conference.
