لقد شكَّلت مسألة الإمامة وتداول السلطة وشرعيتها جوهر الخلاف بين المسلمين ، وإنَّ المعطيات السياسية المتوفرة تؤكد أنَّ الرسول (ص) لم يترك هذه المسألة ولم تكن غائبة عنه منذ بداية الدعوة لأنَّه كان يدرك خطورة هذ الأمر على مستقبل المسلمين لذلك فقد حرص على التأكيد على هذه المسألة والتأسيس لها منذ البواكير الأولى للدعوة لتأكيد لما يكون في المستقبل وهي أنَّ اختيار قيادة الأمة لا يمكن أن يكون إلا من خلال تنصيب إلهي يضمن قيادة الأمة بالمنهج نفسه الذي كان في عهد الرسول (ص) ، وقد جسَّد الرسول (ص) ذلك بكثير من الدلائل التي تؤكد على وصيته للإمام علي بن أبي طالب (ع) بالخلافة من بعده والتي طبقها علمياً في غدير خم .
