يدرس العديد من الباحثين والنقاد أزمة الهوية كظاهرة من ظواهر العالم المعاصر. ويُعتبر سعي الإنسان لتطوير هوية أصيلة في المجتمع ضرورة ملحة، ليس لأنه عاجز عن البقاء بدونها، بل لأن المجتمع المعاصر يفرضها. ومنذ بدايات الأدب، دُرست أزمة الهوية في سياقات متنوعة، مع تركيز معظم الدراسات على المجتمع الأمريكي. فقد عانى المجتمع الأمريكي في فترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، وتحديدًا في خمسينيات القرن العشرين، من الحاجة المُلحة لملء الفراغ الذي كان يكتنف الحياة، وهو ما ساد في الأوساط الأدبية اتجاه "البحث عن الهوية". ورغم أن هذا الاتجاه لم يُفهم تمامًا على أنه ظاهرة سائدة في المجتمع الأمريكي المعاصر، إلا أنه حظي باهتمام كبير.
