The role of the OAS in the peaceful resolution of American disputes( 1948- 1950 )

The Organization of American States (OAS) is the culmination of long-standing efforts by the countries of the Americas to establish an institution dedicated to addressing common issues, whether political, economic, social, or security-related. The OAS’s efforts began with the adoption of its charter in 1948, aiming to be a leader in promoting international security and achieving peace in the Americas. Consequently, some member states sought the OAS’s assistance between 1948 and 1950 to resolve conflicts that arose among them, starting with the dispute between the Dominican Republic and Cuba, followed by the conflict between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and the mutual accusations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Thanks to its mechanisms for peaceful settlement, the OAS has proven its success and ability to intervene and act as a body for resolving disputes among American states through peaceful means.
