Abstract

This study examines the evolution of Chechen–Russian relations in the post-Soviet era, focusing on the First Chechen War (1994–1997) and the Second Chechen War (1999–2009). The study highlights Chechnya’s geopolitical and economic importance in Russian strategy, particularly its location in the Caucasus and the energy routes passing through it. It also analyzes the causes of the conflict, including Chechen separatism, Russian national security concerns, and internal factors in Moscow. The study clarifies the nature of Russian military operations and their far-reaching humanitarian and economic impacts on Chechen society. It discusses the role of Chechen leadership and the shift in resistance tactics from conventional warfare to guerrilla warfare. It also addresses the international community’s response, particularly following the events of September 11, 2001, and the reframing of the conflict within the “war on terror” narrative. The study concludes that the conflict was the result of a complex interplay of local, regional, and international factors. The significance of this research lies in its shedding light on one of the most complex conflicts in the post-Soviet space and in clarifying the relationship between separatist movements and the power politics of major powers.  It also aims to demonstrate the impact of armed conflicts on social, economic, and humanitarian structures, and to enrich Arab scholarship in the field of contemporary international and regional conflicts. The study seeks to analyze the roots of the Chechen–Russian conflict, its historical and political causes, and the role of the United States in that war.
