Abstract

Mahdi al-Hilli’s poetry in elegizing Imam al-Husayn goes beyond the emotional dimension to take on an intellectual orientation, transforming the tragedy into a mode of thought that reflects on the cosmic struggle between the values of truth and falsehood, freedom and tyranny. Elegy, in this sense, is not confined to weeping; rather, it is grounded in rational argumentation that persuades the audience of the nobility of the Husayni cause as a symbol of the sincere human being who rejects all forms of injustice.

Arabic literary heritage is rich with figures who called for the use of reason, such as al-Jahiz, al-Jurjani, and al-Ma‘arri in their works. This intellectual tendency is evident in al-Hilli’s poetry, where antithesis (ṭibāq) transforms into an argumentative structure that highlights the conflict of values and grants the text a universal human dimension. The study sheds light on the ability of a traditional rhetorical device to embody a profound intellectual vision, affirming that poetry, at its highest moments, is an act of thinking, not merely an emotional reaction.

Antithesis, which is fundamentally based on the idea of opposition, is considered an important rhetorical tool through which this intellectual tendency is manifested. It is not mere verbal ornamentation; rather, it is a conceptual means that reflects existential conflict in a condensed linguistic form (such as: death/life, honor/humiliation). Antithesis turns the poem into a poetic argument, prompting the mind to contemplate contradictions and to search for the relationship between opposites. This stimulates the interpretive dimension and makes the reader an active participant in the production of meaning.
