Russian Expansionist Policy in Europe, 1689–1853

This research addresses the expansionist policy pursued by Russia during the period (1689–1853). Under Peter the Great (1689–1725), Russia aimed to transform itself into a major European power by focusing its efforts on securing a maritime outlet that would enable extensive trade and relations with the Western world. To achieve these goals, Russia sought control over the Baltic and Red Seas, which drew it into wide-ranging conflicts with states along these waters, particularly the Ottoman Empire and Sweden. During Peter’s reign, Russia succeeded in gaining control of the Baltic coast. Under Catherine II, this expansionist policy continued, as she aimed to dominate the Ottoman Empire and occupy Constantinople. Through the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca in 1774, Russia secured the right of passage in the Black Sea. This expansionist policy persisted until the reign of Nicholas I.
