Abstract

Architecture is considered the illustrated book of nations; it reflects the cultural and historical reality of those countries. Accordingly, Iranian architecture was no exception to this rule, It embodied the aesthetic and cultural foundations stemming from the social and cultural values of Iran’s history since ancient times. Despite the calamities, wars, and invasions that have befallen the country throughout history, Iranian architecture has maintained a single, distinct style of engineering and design, with some specific additions resulting from interaction and integration with other nations.

Consequently, the first signs of transformation in the artistic realm of Iranian architecture—particularly in painting and ornamentation—emerged during the Safavid era, However, these influences did not bring about a radical change in architecture as a whole, because the transitional phase and development of Iranian architecture began with the Qajar dynasty, and its evolution accelerated during the first and second eras of the Pahlavi dynasty, as a result of internal openness to Western civilization and the adoption and emulation of European architectural and urban planning styles.
